Stories
Guest Speaker:Toni Ellis - NeighbourWoods, Mathieu Alain - Township Urban Forestry Project Manager
Toni Ellis - NeighbourWoods

  • Earth Day is Sunday, April 22nd
  • Outlined how Rotary goals benefit from trees and how trees contribute to the health of individuals.
  • Tree inventory program began in 2009.  The goals of the program include - understand the trees that we have in our community; develop volunteer teams supported by summer students to inventory trees annually.  If you wish to volunteer with an inventory team, there is a training session scheduled for May 24th and please contact Toni if interested.  The inventory will also provide data on the amount of carbon sequestering (storage) that is provided by the trees within our Community.
  • To prevent girdling of the root systems when planting, use native soil rather than special soil to fill the hole.

Mathieu Alain - Township Urban Foresty Project Manager

  • Complimented NeighbourWoods on the impressive job they are doing inventorying trees.
  • Summer of 2018 Planting Projects include - the Rotary planting project scheduled from April 21st.  This project will under plant several Ash Trees located on the grounds of the Sportsplex.  Currently these Ash Trees are healthy but the plantings will provide replacement growth should the Emerald Ash borer cause the removal of these trees.  Southridge Park and the nearby trail will be planted with a mix of trees and shrubs between Bridge Street and Reynolds Road.  A crew of 50 to 100 volunteers will be needed to make improvements to this area of the trail.  The project is scheduled for May 5th.
  • In 2019 improvements to the Cottontail Trail near the Elora Conservation area are scheduled.  Rotary was invited to participate..

Toni and Mathieu indicated that there is renewed focus on Urban Forestry and that  Centre Wellington Arborist Association is creating a website to monitor tree removal.

Rotary International:  Surf's Up:   Who says Rotary Cannot be Fun!

On 27 January, more than 30 SURF members gathered to support the Boys to Men Mentoring Foundation with a 1 Wave Challenge and 5K Beach Run. Rotarians from several clubs, Rotaractors from University of California San Diego, and Interactors from James Madison and University City high schools took part in an attempt to set a world record by exceeding 110 surfers on the same wave at the same time. Sadly, even with 172 surfers, we weren’t able to grab the record. But we did have tons of fun and raised $90,000 for charity!”
